Suter Heads In Game-Winner To Advance Blue Jays to Centennial Finals

BALTIMORE, MD - Freshman Erica Suter scored the golden goal to advance the Johns Hopkins women's soccer team into its fifth consecutive Centennial Conference Tournament Championship game. Hopkins defeated Muhlenberg, 1-0 in double overtime to advance to the championship. The Blue Jays rise to 16-0-3 as the Muhlenberg Mules move to 11-5-4 on the season. In the first half, senior Molly Steele gave freshman Erica Suter a great lead pass heading into the box, but Suter dribbled out of bounds. A yellow card was issued to the Mules goalkeeper Michelle Toher at 36:20 and gave Hopkins a free kick one yard from the box. The Mules brought the ball down field and fired two shots off the crossbar in the 38th minute. Freshman Allison Smith (Berwyn, IL/St. Ignatius Prep) dribbled past two Muhlenberg defenders and poked a shot to the Mules keeper who made the save. In the second half, senior Jane O'Connor poked a shot on a free kick forcing the Mules keeper to dive for a save. Muhlenberg's Emily Olson forced junior goalkeeper Karen Guszkowski to make a save in the 84th minute with a shot near the crossbar tipped up and out by Guszkowski. Neither team was able to score in regulation, sending the semifinal to overtime. Just 2:21 into the second overtime period senior Lisa Irizarry fired the ball into the box off a corner kick, where freshman Erica Suter headed in the game-winner. The goal marked Suter's 11th this season, pushing her into eighth in the JHU record books for single season points (25) and tied for sixth in single season goals (11).
Junior goalkeeper Karen Guszkowski posted her 10th shutout of the season, moving into a tie for first in the single-season shutouts in the JHU record books. She made three saves against Muhlenberg. Guszkowski moves into 10th in single-season saves at Hopkins. The No. 7 Blue Jays will take Dickinson on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Homewood Field for the Centennial Conference Championship. Notes From Centennial Semifinals: Dickinson Defeats Swarthmore, 2-1 Kelsey Cline hit the net for Swarthmore in the first half, giving the Garnet a 1-0 lead. Dickinson's Molly Schaefer tied the score in the first half and Genevieve Olson scored the game-winner in the second half to advance the Red Devils to the Centennial Conference Championship game. . |
