#11 Johns Hopkins Picks Up 3-1 Win Over Muhlenberg in Semifinals
Nov. 3, 2006
BALTIMORE, MD - A goal and an assist from junior Kim Lane (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) led the #11 Johns Hopkins women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Muhlenberg in the Centennial Conference semifinals on Friday night. The Blue Jays (16-2) won their eighth straight game and advance to their fifth Centennial Conference Championship game while Muhlenberg (13-6) had a nine-game win streak snapped. The Blue Jays will meet Swarthmore, a 1-0 winner over Gettysburg, in Sunday's championship game.
The Blue Jays wasted little time in this one as just 13 seconds into the game as senior Jessie McKenzie (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) crossed a ball to senior Nikkole Haines (Ramona, CA/Ramona), who knocked the ball home for her third goal in the last two games. The assist was the 16th of McKenzie's career, which ties Jill Minger's school record.
Hopkins carried the 1-0 lead into the half and quickly extended it to 2-0 as just 27 seconds into the second half. Muhlenberg goalie Kayla Boisvert came out to play a ball in the box, but failed to control it. Lane scooped up the loose ball and fired a shot just inside the near post for her fifth goal of the year. The Blue Jays extended their lead to 3-0 in the 61st minute as Lane found sophomore Lisa Irizarry (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) with a cross-field pass and Irizarry one-timed her third goal of the year past Shauna Henley, who had replaced Boisvert in goal for the Mules.
Muhlenberg got on the scoreboard in the 85th minute as Kristen Cioeta found Mallory DiMaio with a nice cross from the left touchline and DiMaio slipped her ninth goal of the year past Hopkins goalie Karen Guskowski (Sayreville, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick).
Guszkowski made one save for the Blue Jays while Boisvert started the game and made three saves in 51 minutes. Henley had three saves in 39:43 minutes of action.
The Blue Jays will face Swarthmore in Sunday's championship game. Swarthmore picked up a 1-0 win over Gettysburg in the second semifinal. The Garnet got the only goal of the game in the 21st minute as Maggie DeLorme scored on a header off a corner kick. Natalie Negrey picked up the assist as Swarthmore advances to its first ever Centennial Conference Championship.
