BALTIMORE, MD - The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team got three first-half goals, including a pair in the first four minutes, en route to a 4-1 win over visiting Gettysburg Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays remain unbeaten in the Centennial Conference at 5-0-0 and are 10-2-0 overall. The Bullets slip to 6-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference. The win extends Hopkins regular season conference unbeaten streak to 22 (21-0-1) and its home unbeaten streak to 24 (21-0-3).
The Blue Jays needed just 91 seconds on the head of senior Sarah Roeder (Durham, NH/Oyster River). From the right corner, junior Erin Stafford (Doylestown, PA/Villa Joseph Marie) sent a corner kick to Roeder on the near post, who jumped up and headed it inside the far post for her second of the season. Just over two minutes later, Hopkins capitalized on a free kick 30 yards from goal. Junior Jessica Hnatiuk (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) lined up the kick and sailed the ball just under the cross bar to stake Hopkins to a 2-0 lead.
Hnatiuk scored her second straight goal in the 13th minute off another free kick. This time from 25 yards out, she tucked the ball inside the right post to push Hopkins lead to 3-0. Gettysburg ended Hopkins bid at a shutout in the 26th minute to make it a 3-1 game. From the left side, Gettysburg crossed the ball into the Hopkins box. Tara Gaston collected the ball and fired a low shot at the Blue Jay goal. Senior Karen Guszkowski (Sayreville, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) went down to her right and appeared to block the ball, but when she moved the ball crossed the goal line.
Hopkins would get one more in the 84th minute to account for the 4-1 final. Freshman Laura Moody (Rancho Palos, CA/Palos Verdes Peninsula) played a nice ball over the Bullets defense about 30 yards out. Senior Caitlin Moore (Landisville, PA/Hempfield), got a step on the defense, ran on to the ball and lifted it over an on-rushing Allie Rivera for her first of the season.
Guzskowski played the first half in goal and finished with one save. Sophomore
Kristen Redsun (Trabuco Canyon, CA/Santa Margarita) played the second half and also finished with one save. Rivera finished with six saves for the Bullets. Gettysburg's goal ended Hopkins streak of 10 consecutive shutouts at home. It was the first goal the Blue Jays had surrendered at home since October 15, 2008 - a 2-1 win over Franklin & Marshall.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 14 at Franklin & Marshall. Game time in Lancaster, PA is slated for 5:00 pm.
