Box Score

SALEM, VA - Johns Hopkins pitched its second straight shutout, beating Meredith 3-0 on Saturday night to win the 2008 Roanoke Invitational. The Blue Jays improve to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Avenging Angels slip to 1-1-0.

It did not take long for the Blue Jays to get on the board as sophomore Erin Stafford (Doylestown, PA/Villa Joseph Marie) notched up first goal of the season in the 12th minute. Junior Caitlin Moore (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) sent a ball through the Meredith defense that Stafford buried into the left side of the goal to make it 1-0.

Hopkins needed exactly four minutes to extend its lead to 2-0, capitalizing on a breakaway. Junior co-captain Natalie Held (Potomac, MD/Churchill) scored on a hard shot to the bottom left corner of the goal off a short pass from Moore.

The Blue Jay offense would continue to pressure the Avenging Angels and in the 76th minute, freshman Erica Suter (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill) scored her first career collegiate goal to give Hopkins a 3-0 lead.

Junior Karen Guszkowski (Sayreville, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) got the start in the goal for the Blue Jays and did not surrender a goal, before giving way to freshman Kristen Redsun (Trabuco Canyon, CA/Santa Margarita) with 11:01 to play.

Hopkins returns to action and opens the home portion of its 2008 schedule on Monday, Sept. 1 against Hamline. Game time is slated for noon on Homewood Field.
