Women's Lacrosse Weekly Report 3/13 March 13, 2002 The Team: The Blue Jays are 1-3 this season and 0-1 in the American Lacrosse Conference after defeating William & Mary, 11-9, Saturday in Williamsburg. Hopkins will host American, Davidson, and Ohio University this week.
Blue Jays Defeat Tribe: Blue Jays sophomore midfielder Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's) scored two of her three goals late in the second half to break a 9-9 tie and lead the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team to an 11-9 victory over William & Mary Saturday afternoon at Busch Field.
Jamie Larrimore (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) added three goals and an assist for the No. 20 Blue Jays, who picked up their first win of the season. No. 14 William & Mary fell to 1-2 on the year.
Hopkins appeared to be in control of the game when Meghan Burnett (Auburn, NY/Auburn) scored off an assist from Erin Riordan (Brightwaters, NY/Bay Shore) to give the Blue Jays a 9-5 lead with 18:48 remaining in the game, but the Tribe roared back with four goals in a 2:17 span to tie the game with 15:36 left.
However, Pearce scored an unassisted goal at the 14:15 mark to give Hopkins the lead back and scored an insurance goal with 2:46 remaining to put the game away.
A Tough Schedule: The Blue Jays again play a challenging schedule this season, facing seven teams ranked in this week's Brine/IWLCA poll. All four of Hopkins' games this season have come against ranked opponents, including current No. 1 Duke. Later this season the Blue Jays will face No. 6 and seven-time defending national champion Maryland, along with No. 10 Cornell and No. 12 Penn State. Hopkins, which is 5-13 all-time against teams ranked in the Brine/IWLCA poll, fell to current No. 11 Vanderbilt in its season opener and lost to No. 5 North Carolina on March 1. No Sophomore Slump: Blue Jays midfielder Heidi Pearce has picked up this season right where she left off in 2001, scoring nine goals in Hopkins' first four games. Pearce, who finished third on the team last season with 46 points, scored two goals in the opener against Vanderbilt and added three at North Carolina. On Saturday, Pearce scored the last two goals of the game to break a 9-9 tie and give Hopkins the win. McDonald Starts Season Strong: Hopkins junior goalkeeper Jen McDonald (Garden City, NY/Garden City) has played well in the first four games of the 2002 season, recording 44 saves and playing all 240 minutes. McDonald has moved into fifth place on the JHU career saves list with 262, and she needs 68 more to pass Sara Love and become the school's Division I career leader in saves. Freshmen Pay Immediate Dividends: The JHU 2002 roster features eight freshmen, and six have appeared in at least three games this season. Attacker Leah Onda (Sykesville, MD/South Carroll) has started all four games and has scored two goals this season, while Kristen Miller (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep) scored her first career goal March 3 at Duke. Defender Lacey-Leigh Hentz (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) is tied for the conference lead with eight caused turnovers and is the only Hopkins player besides goalkeeper Jen McDonald to play all 240 minutes this season, and Erin Riordan (Brightwaters, NY/Bay Shore) recorded her first career point by posting an assist against William & Mary. Anne Crisafulli (Garden City, NY/Garden City) has appeared in all four games, while Julia Kleene (Rochester, NY/Brighton) has seen action in three contests this year. Wellner Hits Century Mark: Senior attacker Erin Wellner's (East Williston, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) goal against North Carolina on March 1 was the 100th of her career. Wellner is currently third on the JHU Division I goals list, behind only teammate Jamie Larrimore and Danielle Maschuci, and she needs just 10 more goals to move into 10th place on the school's overall goals list. Barcomb Scores Two: Sophomore midfielder Kate Barcomb (Middlebury, VT/Middlebury) scored two goals against William & Mary, the first multi-goal game of her career. Season Leaders: Goals: Heidi Pearce - 9 Assists: Jamie Larrimore - 2 Points: Heidi Pearce - 9 Ground Balls: Heidi Pearce - 16 Draw Controls: Christy Peterson - 10 Caused Turnovers: Heidi Pearce/Lacey-Leigh Hentz - 8 American Lacrosse Conference Standings
