Johns Hopkins Picked Fourth in B1G Preseason Poll
ROSEMONT, IL – The Johns Hopkins women’s lacrosse team was picked to finish fourth in the 2018 Big Ten Women’s Lacrosse Preseason Poll of the league’s seven head coaches it was announced Monday. In addition, three players from each team were named to the preseason players to watch list with seniors Emily Kenul and Shannon Fitzgerald and junior Nicole DeMase earning the honor for Hopkins.
Defending champion Maryland was the unanimous pick to win the 2018 title, followed by Penn State, Northwestern and Hopkins. Rutgers (fifth) and Ohio State (T-6th) and Michigan (T-6th) round out the poll.
Big Ten women's lacrosse features teams that have won 26 national championships and 22 of the 36 NCAA Championships, including 11 of the last 13. Maryland, Penn State, Northwestern and Hopkins are all ranked in the preseason polls by both the IWLCA and Inside Lacrosse.
Kenul is the Blue Jays’ lone returner from last season’s All-Big Ten team. Despite missing four games with an injury, she still finished third on the team in goals (23), points (38) and assists (15). She also led the Blue Jay with 39 draws and ranked fifth in caused turnovers (11). Fitzgerald returns after posting career highs in assists (10), points (43), ground balls (26) and caused turnovers (16). She finished second on last year’s squad with 33 goals and scored four goals against top-ranked Maryland in the B1G semifinals to earn all-tournament team honors. DeMase had a breakout sophomore campaign, posting career highs in every statistical category.
Hopkins opens the season on Friday, February 9 against Marquette. Opening draw at Homewood Field is slated for 2:00 pm.
