April 12, 2005
WASHINGTON, DC - Sophomores Mary Key and Sarah Walsh each scored six points to lead the 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team (8-3) to a 16-10 win over American (5-8) at Reeves Field. The sixteen goals tied for the most scored by the 2005 Blue Jays, who have averaged 14.0 goals in their last three games. Key opened the game with two unassisted goals to give Hopkins a 2-0 lead after just four minutes of action. Then after Moriah Linnell put American on the board at 7:04, Walsh tallied her first point by assisting Meagan Voight at 11:03. Linnell answered nine seconds later with her second goal of the game to bring the Eagles within one, 3-2.
But Walsh dominated the next few minutes, scoring two goals and assisting another to carry the Blue Jays to a five-goal lead with 16 minutes to play in the half. After freshman Annie Wagner scored an unassisted goal at 12:22, Walsh struck immediately, putting in her first goal just 12 seconds later and scoring again off an assist from senior Erin Riordan at 13:38. Walsh then set up Riordan for the Blue Jays' fourth straight goal, and Hopkins led 7-2 at 14:03. American's Chelsea Kapp broke the Blue Jay scoring run with a free position shot at 15:22, sparking an Eagle rally to end the half. Caithlin Gorman and Riordan traded goals before Linnell scored back-to-back goals to bring American within two, 8-6, at the break. Johns Hopkins took its largest lead of the game by scoring the first four goals of the second period. Key scored off a feed from Voight at 27:28, and then assisted Walsh's third goal just 42 seconds later. Freshmen Lauren Schwarzmann and Kadie Stamper also scored during the 4-0 Blue Jay run that put Hopkins ahead 12-6. American would come no closer than five the rest of the way. Key finished with four goals and two assists, while Walsh had three goals and three assists for her second straight six-point performance. Six Blue Jays recorded multiple points, as Riordan added two goals and one assist, Voight had one goal and two assists, Stamper had two goals, and Schwarzman chipped in one goal and one assist. Senior Lacey-Leigh Hentz and freshman Katie Dumais each tallied one goal to round out the Blue Jay scoring.
