#15 Johns Hopkins Downs George Mason, 15-10, in Season Opener
Feb. 21, 2009
BALTIMORE, MD - Eight different players scored for 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins as the Blue Jays downed visiting George Mason 15-10 in the season opener for both teams. The Blue Jays improve to 7-1 all-time in the month of February. Sophomore Brooke Foussadier (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Township) led a balanced Blue Jay attack with a career-high four goals. Trailing 10-5 with 17:42 remaining in the second half, the Patriots scored three unanswered in just 66 seconds to cut the deficit to two. Foussadier halted Mason's run with her third of the day after junior Paige Ibello (Cockeysville, MD/Maryvale Prep) passed up a free position shot for an open Foussadier on the left post. That ignited a five-goal Blue Jay run in a span of just 3:10 as Hopkins pushed out to a 15-8 lead. Hopkins then capitalized on a player-advantage a Madalyn Jamison yellow card, with freshmen Colleen McCaffrey (Mount Sinai, NY/Mount Sinai) and Rachel Serio (Mt. Airy, MD/McDonogh) connecting to make it a 12-8 game. McCaffrey then found the cage after dodging through traffic in the arc and firing one past Sara Longobucco for her second of the day. Just over a minute later, it was sophomore Brianna Cronin (Arlington, MA/Arlington), who missed the last half of 2008 with a torn ACL, scoring on a shot of Longobucco's right shoulder. Foussadier book-ended the run for the Blue Jays, scoring off a restart. Jamison would score back-to-back goals in a 58-second span, making it a 15-10 with 5:05 to play. That would be as close as the Patriots would get as the Blue Jays controlled play for the remainder of the game. Ibello and junior Sam Schrum (Pasadena, MD/St. Mary's) got the Blue Jays on the board early, scoring back-to-back goals just 48 seconds apart. Mason answered with goals from Brittany Berger and Caroline Hoyt to tie the game at 2-2 with 17:34 to play in the first half. Hopkins pushed the lead back to two as freshman Candaci Rossi (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) and Serio scored the first goals of their careers. Rossi picked up a loose ball in front of the cage and fired a high shot past Longobucco. Serio dodged the right alley and rifled a shot into the side netting to make it a 4-2 game.
Jamison got one back for the Patriots with her first of the game but Foussadier answered with her second of the day with just 2:08 remaining in the half as Hopkins took a 7-4 lead into the lockerroom. Coming of the half, Hopkins needs just 1:19 to make it 8-4 as junior Brett Bathras (Severna Park, MD/Severn School) scored on a free position shot. Julianne Tela cut the deficit back to three with a free position goal for the Patriots. Just over two minutes later, Schrum found Ibello breaking open in front of the crease and Ibello quick-sticked a shot past Longobucco to push it 9-5. Just over five minutes later, the pair connected on the exact same play, making it 10-5. Ibello finished with three goals and a career-high two assists, tying her career-high with five points. Also having multi-point games were Schrum (1g, 2a), McCaffrey (2g, 1a) and Serio (2g). McCaffrey also scooped up five ground balls and controlled three draws. Junior Lizzie O'Ferrall (Baltimore, MD/Mount De Sales) finished with four saves to earn the win, while Longobucco had eight saves in the loss. Hopkins outshot Mason (26-21) and won the ground ball battle (20-11). The Blue also forced 18 Patriot turnovers as Mason went just 9-of-17 on clears. Mason has the edge in draw controls, winning 15 of 27. Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, February 25 as eighth-ranked Georgetown visits Homewood Field. The game will be televised by ESPNU with the opening draw scheduled for 4:04 pm at Homewood Field. |
