Johns Hopkins Captures 2000 Centennial Conference Field Hockey Championship

BALTIMORE Preseason favorite and 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins captured the 2000 Centennial Conference Field Hockey Championship with a 1-0 victory over Swarthmore on Saturday evening at Homewood Field, giving JHU back-to-back titles, and its third league trophy, since 1993. Hopkins junior Beth Pollock (Cleveland Heights, OH/Cleveland Heights) tallied the only goal of the game off a penalty corner with 26:23 remaining in the second period, and senior goalkeeper Katie Reytar (Laurel, MD/Hammond) made seven saves on the night for her fifth consecutive shutout to seal the win. The Blue Jays earn the Conference's automatic National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament bid, and await for pairings to be announced on Sunday. JHU will make its second-consecutive NCAA appearance and its fifth overall. JHU extended its school record-winning streak to 15 games and improved its mark to 17-4 overall, which ties the school record for wins in a season set in 1993. The Blue Jays also tied the single-season shutout mark of 13, which was set last year. Hopkins, the No. 1 seed, finished the CC regular season undefeated with a 9-0 record, and won Friday's tournament semifinal match, 2-0, against No. 4 seed Muhlenberg. Swarthmore beat #3 Washington College, 2-0, on Friday to advance to today's final. The Garnet's record falls to 14-6 overall. SC outshot the Blue Jays 7-2 and held a 6-1 penalty corner advantage in the first half, which ended deadlocked at 0-0. Hopkins came out strong offensively to start the second half, earning three penalty corners in the first 10 minutes. Pollock capitalized on the third corner with a right-to-left blast, which beat Garnet goalie Kate Nelson-Lee (Jamestown, RI/Wheeler). Junior Ashley Robbins (Newtown Square, PA/Westtown) and senior Amy Bruschi (Princeton Junction, NJ/W. Windsor-Plainsboro) assisted on the marker. Swarthmore had several chances late in the game to tie, picking up four penalty corners in the final minute and a half, but could not convert any of them. Senior All-American Lauren Carney (Wilmington, DE/Tatnall) posted a defensive save with 1:10 remaining in the contest to help preserve the shutout. The Garnet attempted 13 shots and had 12 penalty corners. The Blue Jays registered eight shots and five penalty corners. Reytar recorded seven saves for Hopkins, while Nelson-Lee deflected six shots.
