LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins senior Sophia Tieu (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino) has been named the Centennial Conference Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week. Tieu led the Blue Jays to a pair of crucial road wins last week at eighth-ranked College of New Jersey and Washington College. This is the second time this season and the fourth time in her career that she has earned the honor.
On Tuesday night, Hopkins traveled to Ewing, NJ to take on the TCNJ Lions. The Blue Jays were in search of their first-ever win over the perennial power, and got it, 2-1 in double overtime. Tieu checked into the game at the half and turned aside all eight shots she faced through the second half and the two overtimes. She had four saves in the second half and a pair in each of the overtime periods.
Three days later, Hopkins traveled to Chestertown, MD to take on Washington College in a Centennial Conference match-up. Tieu went the distance, playing all 70 minutes and stopping both shots she faced in posting her second shutout of the season.
Tieu posts a 1.13 goals against average with a .810 save percentage this season. She is 9-2-0 and has posted two shutouts to date. She currently ranks ninth in JHU history in career saves (237), fifth in minutes played (3472:48) and 10th in shutouts (9). Tieu leads the Centennial Conference in both goals against average and save percentage.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 14 as the Blue Jays travel to Lancaster, PA to take on the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. The Centennial Conference game is slated for 7:30 pm.
