Horton Named Second Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District

BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins field hockey senior Leah Horton (Wayne, PA/Upper Merion) earned Second Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District At-Large honors on Thursday. She joins Meighan Roose '06 as the only other player in program history to earn the honor. The District II region includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve. Sports eligible under the at-large program include: women's bowling, women's crew, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo, and men's wrestling. The program's all-time assists leader, Horton is a two-time NFHCA All-American and a four-time All-Centennial Conference selection. After three years in the midfield, she made the move to defense in 2008 and turned in the best season of her career. She posted career-highs in goals (8), assists (10) and points (26) en route to First Team All-America honors. Horton is just the third player in program history to earn First Team All-America honors and the first defender. In addition to holding the program record for career assists (31), she also ranks in the top 10 in career goals (T-9th / 26) and points (5th / 83). A Dean's List student and two-time NFHCA All-Academic selection, Horton is majoring in public health with a minor in economics and boasts a 3.64 cumulative GPA. She has interned with the EPA and the Health Federation of Philadelphia. She has also volunteered with The Hope Lodge, which provides housing for cancer patients.
