Nine Blue Jays Named to NFHCA National Academic Squad

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins field hockey team placed nine student-athletes on the 2015 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad it was recently announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). In addition freshman Megan Ophel was named a Division III Scholar of Distinction. JHU also received the Division III National Team Academic Award for the 11th straight year.

The NFHCA National Academic Squad recognizes those collegiate student-athletes who have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 through the first semester of the academic year. Since 2001, Blue Jays have combined to earn All-Academic honors from the NFHCA 157 times. The Scholar of Distinction Award was introduced in 2013 and recognizes those student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the academic year. Hopkins earned the Team Academic Award, given in recognition of programs with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher, with a team GPA of 3.30 for the fall semester.

Ophel is one of just four student-athletes from the Centennial Conference (CC) that were named Scholars of Distinction. Seniors Kiana Duncan and Shannon Parker and junior Austin Davis are named to the NFHCA Academic Squad for the third time in her career. Earning the honor for the second time in their careers are senior Miceile Barrett, juniors Abby Grant and Victoria Piscopo and sophomore Francesca Cali. Ophel and classmate Claire Fox earn their honor for the first time.
