July 30, 2009

BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins University Director of Athletics Tom Calder announced today the hiring of Austin Young as the women's fencing head coach. Young, who has coached the JHU men's fencing team for six seasons, will serve as head coach of both programs. He replaces James Murray as the head coach of the women's fencing program. Murray served as head coach from 2001 through the 2009 season.

"Austin Young has been a very good addition to our staff having coached the men's team for several years," said Tom Calder. "With him now also coaching the women's team, both programs will continue to improve in the future and I know our fencers will have an excellent experience under his leadership."

In six seasons at the helm of the men's program, Young has compiled a 126-58 (.685) record and is the second winningest coach in program history. The Blue Jays have posted 20 or more wins in four of his six seasons, including a school-record tying 26 wins in 2007-08. Young has led Hopkins to two Middle Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) titles (2005, 2008).

Young inherits a women's program that went 17-9 last season and finished second behind #8 Temple at the 81st annual National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championships. In addition, the Blue Jays claimed the Army Trophy at the NIWFA Championships as the top Division III team. Leading the way for JHU in 2009-10 will be All-NIWFA selections Mary Vitale (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees), Alysson Mondoro (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) and Lauren Chinn (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School). Chinn led the Blue Jays at the NCAA Regionals this past spring, placing eighth in the Epee.

Prior to taking over the men's program in 2003, Young served as the owner and head coach of the Clinton Fencing Club in Lebanon, NJ for six years. His duties included planning and leading group practices for all skill levels and giving individual lessons in all three weapons.

Additionally, Young was an assistant men's fencing coach at Rutgers University during the 1997 through 1999 seasons. At Rutgers Young organized and led practices, gave individual lessons, recruited high school athletes, and organized all home meets. He helped lead the Scarlet Knights to ninth and 13th place finishes at the NCAA Championships.

Young is a 1996 graduate of Rutgers University with a degree in finance. He and his wife Judy reside in Baltimore.
