Three Blue Jays Named to All-NIWFA Team

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team placed three fencers on the 2010-11 All-NIWFA Team as announced today. The Blue Jays, which finished second at the 2011 National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championship, were second behind perennial champion Temple as the Owls garnered five selections. Freshman Jackie Heath added another honor to her growing resume when she earned First Team All-NIWFA honors in the Foil. She finished second at the NIWFA championship as well as helping the Blue Jays to a second place finishes in the overall standings and the team Foil. Earlier this season, Heath won the Foil title at the annual NIWFA Christmas Invitational and in February earned Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Fencer of the Year honors after going 15-1 at the EWFC Individual Championship. She also helped the Blue Jays to their second straight EWFC team title as Hopkins went 6-0 in the dual meet competition. Heath is tied for the team lead with 75 wins this season as she boasts a 75-24 record. Junior Marion Trumbull joined Heath on the All-NIWFA Foil Team, earning second team honors. She placed fifth at the NIWFA Championship last weekend for her second straight top-five finish at the event. Trumbull finished second earlier this season at the NIWFA Christmas Invitational and the EWFC Individual Championship with a 14-2 record. Trumbull grabbed First Team All-EWFC honors for the second straight year and was the 2010 EWFC Fencer of the Year in the Foil. She also boasts a 75-24 record this season and is tied with Heath in total wins. Freshman Katherine Simeon grabbed Second Team All-NIWFA honors in the Sabre after placing fifth at the NIWFA Championship to help Hopkins to a second place finish in the Sabre. Earlier this year, Simeon finished in 13th place at the NIWFA Christmas Invitational before placing fourth at the EWFC Individual Championship. She also earned First Team All-EWFC honors and is 72-34 this season to lead the Sabre team in total wins.
Junior Lauren Chinn was also honored, as she was one of 13 fencers named to the NIWFA All-Academic squad. A cellular and molecular biology major, Chinn has a 3.14 cumulative GPA. She finished 16th at the 2011 NIWFA Championship after finishing ninth in 2010 and second in 2009. Chinn won the Epee title in 2008 and 2010 at the NIWFA Christmas Invitational and was the EWFC Fencer of the Year in 2010 after helping Hopkins to its first EWFC title. She earned First Team All-NIWFA honors in 2009 and First Team All-EWFC honors in 2010. Chinn leads the Epee team with 74 wins this season as she boasts a 74-21 record and recently won her 200th career bout. |
