BALTIMORE, MD - The women's fencing team has been idle from team competition since early December but several Blue Jays made major progress during the holiday break. Kim Strazdas, Sarah Smilow, Joanna Kochaniak and Jen Petsche all qualified for the Junior Olympics in Arlington, Texas, this February.

Strazdas (Westford, MA/Westford Academy), a sophomore at Hopkins, won the Maryland Division United States Fencing Assoication Under-20 sabre event by defeating classmate Smilow (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown), who also locked in a berth.

Sophomore Kochaniak (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) won the Under-20 foil competition with a 15-14 win over Strazdas while freshman Petsche (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) placed third.

All four Blue Jays will compete as "unattached" fencers in the four-day Junior Olympics held Feb 18-21.

The women's fencing team travels to the University of North Carolina for a meet with Virginia, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Boston College and Florida on January 15.
