JERSEY CITY, NJ - Johns Hopkins sophomore Marion Trumbull (Westport, CT/Hopkins School) went unbeaten on the day to capture the Foil title at the 78th annual NIWFA Christmas Invitational. The Blue Jays placed two fencers in the top 10 in both the Foil and the Sabre, as JHU did not compete in the Epee.
Trumbull, who did not compete at last year's Christmas Invitational, went 24-0 on the day to claim the Foil. That boosts her record on the year to 41-5. Sophomore Colleen Stone (Woodbury, MN/Math and Science Academy), also competing for the first time at the annual event, finished seventh after going 15-9 on the day. She is now 22-24 on the season. Freshman Diane Duros (St. Louis Park, MO/Parkway West) went 2-4 on the day to finish in 38th place and improve to 2-8.
In the Sabre, junior Mary Vitale (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees) led a contingent of four Blue Jays in the top 40 with a fourth place finish. She finishes in the top five for the second straight year after placing second in 2008. Sophomore Katie Herman (Totowa, NJ/Passaic Valley Regional), who placed 21st at last year's invitational, finished in seventh in 2009. Freshman Amy Conwell (Ardmore, PA/Country Day School of the Sacred Heart) finished in 23rd, while classmate Shelby Hecht (Forest Hills, NY/Townsend Harris) took 38th.
The Hopkins women's fencing team is now idle until January.
