Dec. 5, 2005

TEANECK, NJ - Freshman Erica Hartmann finished in ninth place in saber to lead the Johns Hopkins women's fencing team at the NIWFA Christmas Invitational at Fairleigh Dickinson University on Sunday. The tournament included 142 participants from 14 schools.

"Hartmann missed the final by the smallest margin," head coach Jim Murray said. "Fencers with equal win records are decided by the number of touches scored and a single point will tip the balance."

In other saber results, freshman Alla Brafman placed 24th and junior Sarah Smilow, using her left hand due to a wrist injury to her right, finished 27th.

Seniors Katherine Dunne and Cathy Gallagher placed 15th and 18th respectively in epee, where they competed in pools that held the top eight finishers between them. In foil, freshman Grace Fried finished 15th and junior Joanna Kochaniak placed 24th.
