Hopkins Goes Unbeaten at Haverford Invitational

HAVERFORD, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team won its first three matches of the year as the Blue Jays went undefeated at the Haverford Invitational. Hopkins topped Drew (25-2), Lafayette (22-7) and Rutgers (24-3). Sophomores Kathleen Rand (9-0) and Liz Caris (8-0) and seniors Lauren Chinn (8-0) and Jenny Lenz (3-0) all went unbeaten on the day to lead the Blue Jays to a 3-0 record.
Versus Drew, Hopkins swept the Foil thanks to 3-0 outings by seniors Colleen Stone and Jen Hession and sophomore Jackie Heath. Hession and Heath both recently won their 100th career bout at the Temple Open. In the Sabre and Epee, the Blue Jays went 8-1 to take the match 25-2. Rand and classmate Katherine Simeon, who eclipsed the 100-win milestone at the Temple Open, each went 3-0 in the Sabre to pace the Blue Jays. And in the Epee, Chinn, Caris and freshman Gianna Puzzo each went 2-0.
Heath went undefeated against the Scarlet Knights as well to lead the Blue Jays to a 7-2 win in the Foil. In the Sabre, meanwhile, Lenz, Simeon and Rand each went 3-0 as Hopkins won 9-0. Chinn and Caris turned the same trick in the Epee, going a combined 6-0, in an 8-1 win for JHU. Against Lafayette, Hession and Heath each went 2-1, with Heath winning the clinching bout in a 5-4 win in the Foil. While in the Sabre, Rand and freshman Rachel Kalina each went 3-0 as JHU won 8-1. And in the Epee, Caris, Chinn and Puzzo swept the Leopards by a combined 9-0 score.
Hopkins returns to action on December 4 at the annual NIWFA Christmas Invitational in Jersey City, NJ.
