PHILADELPHIA, PA - Lauren Chinn (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) was the top finisher for the Johns Hopkins women's fencing team on Sunday at the annual Temple Open. The freshman placed 18th out of 86 competitors in the Epee. Senior Grace Fried (Forest Hills, NY/Stuyvesant) also finished in the top 20 for the Blue Jays, placing 20th out of 98 in the Foil.

Freshman Nicole Salter (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) had a top 25 finish for the Blue Jays, placing 22nd in the Epee. While senior Ying Guo (Fargo, ND/Fargo South) placed 35th and freshman Chelsea James (Lombard, IL/Glenband East) placed 50th.

In the Foil, freshman Jen Hession (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) also placed in the top 25, taking 23rd with a steady performance on the day. Joining Hession in the top 25 was classmate Colleen Stone (Woodbury, MN/Math and Science Academy) with a 25th place finish. Sophomore Sofia de Benedictis (London, England/Chelteham Ladies' College) took 36th, followed by junior Samantha Dolan (S. Pasadena, CA/S. Pasadena) in 51st and sophomore Michelle Gulino (Brooklyn, NY/Convent of the Sacred Heart) in 59th.
 

 

Sophomore Mary Vitale (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees) was the Blue Jays top finisher in the Sabre, taking 24th out of 97 competitors. Freshman Katie Herman (Totowa, NJ/Passaic Valley Regional) followed with a 32nd place finish.

"Katherine has been the greatest surprise for the Blue Jays this season," head coach James Murray commented. "A walk-on with good experience, she continued to surprise opponents at Temple as well."

Sophomore Laura Gelston (New York, NY/Phillips Exeter Academy) finished in 50th place, followed by sophomores Alysson Mondoro (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) in 53rd and Rose Foran (Los Angeles, CA) in 55th place.
