Hopkins Competes at US Collegiate Fencing Squad Championship

NEW YORK, NY - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team competed at the second annual United States Collegiate Squad Championships. Three of the national top five teams were competing at the event, including Princeton, St. John's and Notre Dame. For complete results, please click here. Hopkins placed 13th (of 17) in the Foil, 12th (of 19) in the Epee and 12th (of 16) in the Sabre. In the Foil, the Blue Jay team of sophomore Jackie Heath and seniors Jen Hession and Colleen Stone were seeded 13th and earned a first round bye. The trio then faced off against the fourth-seeded team from St. Johns, falling 45-19, in the round of 16. The JHU Epee team of sophomore Liz Caris, senior Lauren Chinn, junior Komal Kumar and freshman Gianna Puzzo combined for 43 points, but lost by a single point to the fifth-seeded team from Penn in the round of 16. And in the Sabre, freshmen Sarah Hewes and Rachel Kalina, senior Jenny Lenz and sophomore Katherine Simeon racked up 34 points but it wasn't enough in a 45-34 loss to fifth-seeded Penn. The Blue Jays will return to action on Saturday, March 10 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional at Lafayette. The event is slated to start at 8:15 am.
