DURHAM, NC - Freshman Grace Fried (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) was the top finisher for the Johns Hopkins women's fencing team at the 2006 Mid-Atlantic Fencing Regional Championship this past weekend. Duke University hosted the championships at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, NC.
Fried, the only Blue Jay competing in the Foil, finished 16th. It was the best finish at the 2004 NCAA Regionals in the Foil, since 2004. In the Saber, freshman Erica Hartmann (Silver Spring, MD/Montgomery Blair) was seeded 27th but finished 23rd. Junior Sarah Smilow (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) finished in 27th.
In the Epee, senior Katherine Dunn (Beacon, NY/Beacon) finished 30th. Sophomore Cindy Liu (Walnut, CA/Walnut) was seeded 36th heading into the competition but finished 28th.
