Sabre Squad Wins Giorgio Santelli Trophy at NIWFA Championship

The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team placed fourth overall and the Sabre squad won the Giorgio Santelli Trophy at the 90th annual National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championship. In addition, three Blue Jays medaled and five placed in the top 16.
How it Happened
The Blue Jay Epee squad placed third with 18 victories for its third straight top-three finish at the championship. Freshman Shaina Morris led Hopkins as she finished first in the A strip and then placed fifth overall. Sophomore Shivani Bisen finished in sixth place in the B strip with a 4-5 record. Junior Jaynie Criscione finished in third in the C strip (5-1) and sophomore Jiawen Zeng placed ninth (0-2).
In the Foil, Hopkins finished in sixth place with 12 victories. Sophomore Katherine Xiang finished in 10th overall after placing sixth in the A strip (4-5). Junior Rebecca Rosenthal took seventh place in the B strip (4-5) while in the C strip junior Kiera Wolfe placed seventh (2-2) and senior Elizabeth Konopacki placed eighth (2-3).
The Sabre squad went 25-2 to claim the Giorgio Santelli Trophy, its second straight. Sophomores Alicja Tomaszewski and Erin Chen took second and third, respectively overall. Chen won the A strip with a 9-0 record, while Tomaszewski won the B strip with an 8-1 record. Freshman Rebecca Zhou took second in the C strip as she went 8-1. Tomaszewski took second place after finishing in fifth a year ago while this is Chen's second straight top-three finish.
What it Means
Morris, Tomaszewski and Chen all earned First Team All-NIWFA honors while Xiang and Zhou grabbed second team honors.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 10 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional in Easton, PA.
