HAVERFORD, PA -
The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team finished fifth out of 16 teams at the 77th annual National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championships at Haverford last weekend. The Blue Jays now have seven fencers qualified for the NCAA tournament at Drew this weekend.
Ann Kim, Rachel Sussman, Annie Holstein and Michelle Gutierrez qualified for the NCAAs in sabre, while Liz Ordun, Jen Petsche and Joanna Kochaniak qualified in foil.
The saber team finished third out of 15 teams at the NIWFA, earning just one point less than No. 1 Drew and No. 2 Temple. Holstein was named to first-team All-NIWFA with a second-place individual finish and Kim earned second-team honors with a four-place finish. Gutierrez finished in 16th place.
The epee squad placed ninth out of 15 teams, while the Blue Jay foilists finished seventh out of 16 teams. Petsche placed 10th in foil and Catherine Chen finished 14th in epee.
