BALTIMORE, MD - Freshman Jen Hession (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) went unbeaten on the day to win the Foil title and Fencer of the Year honors at the 2009 Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Individual Championships Sunday. In all four Blue Jays medaled and earned all-conference honors. In addition, Hopkins finished second on Feb. 15 at the EWFC Team Championships.

"It is rare that in a championship event, a fencer will go undefeated on the day," said head coach James Murray. "As the event went on Jen hit her stride. Sofia also had an exceptional series of bouts, with many of her wins coming in the closing seconds of the bout."

Hession won all 18 of her bouts in the Foil to earn First Team All-EWFC honors in addition to being named Fencer of the Year. Sophomore Sofia de Benedictis (London, England/Chelteham Ladies' College) went 15-3 to finish second behind Hession and earn first team all-conference honors. In addition, freshman Colleen Stone (Woodbury, MN/Math and Science Academy) finished in 10th in the foil for he Blue Jays.

In the Epee, senior Ying Guo (Fargo, ND/Fargo South) took sixth to earn Second Team All-EWFC honors. While freshman Katie Herman (Totowa, NJ/Passaic Valley Regional) took eighth in the Sabre for second team all-conference honors. Sophomore Rose Foran (Los Angeles, CA/ Milken Community) took 15th in the Sabre for Hopkins.

In the team portion of the EWFC Championships on Sunday, Feb. 15, Hopkins took second with a 5-1 record on the day. Hopkins picked up wins over Yeshiva (25-2), CCNY (22-5), Stevens Tech (21-6), Hunter (19-8) and Drew (16-11) before suffering a close 14-13 loss to Haverford.

 

 

The Foil squad led the way, winning 43 of 54 bouts, while the Sabre squad went 39-15. Senior Grace Fried (Forest Hills, NY/Stuyvesant) led the Foil squad with 14 wins on the day. Junior Katie Kim (Garden City, NY/Garden City) and de Benedictis picked up 11 wins apiece, while Stone won seven bouts.

In the Sabre, sophomore Mary Vitale (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees) led the way with 17 wins, while sophomore Alysson Mondoro (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) won 13 bouts. And in the Epee, Guo and freshmen Lauren Chinn (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) and Nicole Salter (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) each won 10 bouts for the Blue Jays.

Hopkins is action next at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association Championships on Saturday, February 28 hosted by Rutgers-New Brunswick at College Avenue Gymnasium.
