PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team went 2-2 at last weekend's Temple Open with wins over Queens (22-5) and Fairleigh Dickinson (19-8). The Blue Jays dropped a 17-10 decision to Brandeis before losing 23-4 to eighth-ranked Temple. Hopkins is now 12-8 on the season heading into next weekend's EWFC Championships.

Freshman Lauren Chinn (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) turned in another solid performance, winning seven of her nine bouts to lead an Epee squad that won 21 of 36 bouts on the day. Senior Ying Guo (Fargo, ND/Fargo South) also had a solid day, winning seven bouts for the Blue Jays. Freshman Nicole Salter (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) went 5-4 on the day, while sophomore Corinne Warren (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe) went 3-1 and freshman Chelsea James (Lombard, IL/Glenband East) went 1-1.

The Foil team was led by senior Grace Fried (Forest Hills, NY/Stuyvesant) with a 5-2 record on the day. Freshman Jen Hession (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) also won five bouts and finished with a 5-7 record. Freshman Colleen Stone (Woodbury, MN/Math and Science Academy) went 2-1, while sophomore Sofia de Benedictis (London, England/Chelteham Ladies' College) went 2-3 and junior Katie Kim (Garden City, NY/Garden City) was 1-4.

In the Sabre, sophomore Mary Vitale (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees) led the Blue Jays with a 7-4 record. Sophomore Laura Gelston (New York, NY/Phillips Exeter Academy) went 6-5. And sophomores Rose Foran (Los Angeles, CA/ Milken Community) went 3-1 and Alysson Mondoro (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) went 3-6.
 

 

Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 15 at the EWFC Championships hosted by Haverford College. Hopkins will fence against Drew, Stevens Tech, Hunter, Yeshiva, Haverford and City beginning at 10:00 am.
