Baltimore, MD - Johns Hopkins junior swimmer David Lofthus, senior swimmer Krissy Brinsley, and senior rower J. Dawn Waters were named to the Verizon Academic All-America District II Spring At Large Teams, announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Lofthus (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), who has a 3.97 GPA as a biology major, was one of 10 student-athletes selected to the men's first team and will be on the national ballot, with the national team being announced on June 11. Lofthus was the only Blue Jay swimmer to score points in seven events, the most an individual can enter, at the NCAA Championships on March 21-23. Lofthus finished third in the 100 butterfly in 49.54, was sixth in the 200 backstroke in 1:51.90, and placed seventh in the 200 IM in 1:53.74 to lead Hopkins to a second place finish, its highest finish 1981. Lofthus was also a member of the second-place 400 medley relay, 200 medley relay, and 800 freestyle relay teams, as well as the fourth-place 400 freestyle relay team.

Brinsley (Avon, IN/Avon) and Waters (Sugar Land, TX/Calhoun) were each named to the women's second team, which also consisted of 10 student-athletes. Brinsley, who has a 3.46 GPA as a public health major, led the Hopkins women to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships on March 14-16 by scoring points in six events. Brinsley placed second in the 100 backstroke in 56.46 and third in the 200 backstroke in 2:04.54, while being a part of four relay teams that finished in the top 10. Brinsley was a member of the third-place 400 freestyle relay team, the fourth-place 400 medley relay team, the sixth-place 200 freestyle relay team, and the ninth-place 800 freestyle relay team.

Waters, who has a 3.83 GPA in math, was a co-captain of the Hopkins women's crew team this season and was a member of the JHU women's varsity eight boat. She has led JHU varsity eight boats to numerous successes, including a goal medal at the Occoquan Sprints, two silver medals at the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Championships including one at the Division I level, a bronze medal at the Head of the Occoquan, and a gold medal at the South Eastern Regional Collegiate Sprints. Waters is also a two-time recipient of the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award and last year was selected to the USRowing Association Scholar-Athlete First Team.

The District II College Division consists of all non-NCAA Division colleges and universities in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. To be nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
