JHU Crew Races at Occoquan Sprints FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Thursday, April 12, 2001 Contact: Carlton White, Assistant SID, 410/516/0638 JHU CREW RACES AT OCCOQUAN SPRINTS FAIRFAX, Va. - Johns Hopkins' men's and women's crew teams competed with 21 other collegiate squads at the Occoquan Sprints held at the Occoquan Reservior in Faifax, VA on April 8. The event, which was hosted by George Mason, was held under bright, sunny skies with a slight tailwind and no current.JHU's women's varsity eights, ranked 14th nationally in the latest NCAA Division II/III Collegiate Rowing Coaches poll, finished first in the consolation race with a time of 7:25.90. The boat placed fourth in its heat (7:16.90) with the top 3 boats earning trips to the finals. Men's varsity eights was second in its consolation race, crossing the finish in 6:25:10 behind Charles Street rival Loyola (6:21.30). The men also finished fourth in their preliminary heat with a time of 6:12.82. The Blue Jays' men's pair boat claimed a second-place showing (7:40.10) in its heat. In other racing action, JHU's men's novice four boat placed first in its heat in a time of 7:21.10, while the men's novice eights finished fourth in 7:12.00. JHU's women's novice eights also claimed fourth-place in its heat, ending the race in 8:10.10. Hopkins' men's and women's crew teams will be in action again, rowing in the Murphy Cup on April 21, in Philadelphia
