Hopkins Returns From South Carolina Ready For Spring Campaign
March 30, 2006 The Johns Hopkins men's and women's crew teams returned from their spring break training camp in Summerton, South Carolina, last Saturday. The teams spent the week at Camp R.M. Cooper, a 4H Leadership Center, training for the upcoming season, which begins this weekend. While the camp provided meals and lodging for the rowers, the teams practiced three times a day, improving their skills on and off the water.
Though the weather was a bit chillier than expected, the wind and rain didn't slow the squads down. Spring break provides the only opportunity for the team to do nothing but eat, sleep, and row, and coaches Steve Perry, Joel Carlin, and Doug Keen took full advantage, having their rowers get in as many miles as possible, while drilling to improve bladework and develop team dynamics.
Coaches also used the training to mix up lineups and take video of their rowers, which was reviewed in between practices.
The week allowed first year rowers and varsity rowers to bond, and an afternoon in Charleston, South Carolina, on Wednesday, gave the team a chance to rest, as well as take in the culture of the historic city.
Though each team had its own individual routine, collective goals were met as the men and women scrimmaged against several other crews at the camp on Thursday and Friday. Rowers faced off in both fours and eights, and though the results were mixed, the races yielded potential for growth and success in the upcoming season. The varsity women were particularly successful, dominating their events.
The crews resumed normal practices this week in preparation for the Casperson Cup regatta this Saturday. The men and women will compete against Washington College and St. John's College in the annual race. The race site rotates between the three schools, and this year takes place at Middle Branch Park, the Blue Jay's home turf. On Sunday, the team travels to Virginia for the Occoquan Sprints where they will fight for gold against teams from around the region.
