Baltimore, MD - Laura Rauchfuss, a 1997 Johns Hopkins graduate and member of the women's crew team, has been named the USRowing 2001 Female Athlete of the Year, the organization recently announced.

Rauchfuss led the women's quadruple sculls to a bronze medal at the 2001 FISA World Rowing Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland, in August, the first time since 1993 that an American crew had won a medal in that event in either the world championships or Olympics.

Rauchfuss also won a bronze medal in the women's double sculls at the 2001 FISA World Cup in Serville, Spain, and picked up a silver medal in the women's quadruple sculls at the 2001 FISA World Cup stop in Princeton, N.J.

Rauchfuss, a native of Riverside, CT, who currently resides in Seattle, WA, was honored at the 2001 USRowing Annual Convention in Boston, MA, in December.

The 2001 Male Athlete of the Year award went to Mooresville, IN, native Steve Tucker.
