BOSTON, MA -
In a weekend when the Red Sox took a two-game lead in the World Series and the Patriots extended their NFL winning streak to 21 games, Boston also hosted the largest two-day rowing race in the world. The Johns Hopkins men's and women's crew teams competed at the Head of the Charles in Boston on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 23-24 and left the championship fall regatta with satisfying results.
On Saturday, senior John Cutright rowed in the club singles event and with a time of 16:40.504 placed 40th out of over 50 of the top collegiate rowers.
The women's club four event saw Ellie Glifort (bow), Caroline Hookway, Angela Ko, Laura DeMare (stroke) and Ariel Lyons-Warren (cox) finish 21st in a field of over 40 boats. The Blue Jay women finished in 15:34.965 but lost 30-45 seconds due to interference by the boat in front of them.
The next day, the men's collegiate eight placed 37th out of 45 boats at 12:37.989. The Johns Hopkins boat of
Dave Small (bow), Aaron Selikson, Pete Ryan, Bobby Mattina, Teddy Drivas, Lukasz Bugaj, Chris Vaglia, Wesley Fredericks (stroke) and Rachel Raskob (cox) was within 30 seconds of the 15 boats ahead of them in a tight race for all teams. Trinity College won the event in 11:29.384.
Conditions were brisk, cold and windy for the races and the course was shortened by 1/4 length due to rough water at the starting point.
