Hopkins Crew Competes In Mid-Atlantic Championships May 19, 2003
Lorton, VA - The Johns Hopkins women's novice four won its grand final in 8:09.1 to lead the Blue Jay men's and women's crew teams at the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Crew Championships on May 4. The team of Manuella Andrade (Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais), Ellie Glifort (Chugiak, AK/Chugiak), Priscilla Pang (Grand Prairie, TX/Texas Academy of Math & Science), Renee Egusa (Westport, CA/Staples) and coxswain Payal Ghosh (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury) finished ahead of Carnegie Mellon in 8:13.4, Loyola in 8:14.3, Virginia Tech in 8:25.6, Susquehanna in 8:30.8, and Penn State in 8:43.5. After finishing second in its morning heat, the women's varsity pair of Allison McNickle (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook) and Jamie Planck (Peoria, IL/Richwoods) placed fourth in the afternoon's grand final. Bucknell won the race in 8:06.9, ahead of Carnegie Mellon in 8:15.5, Penn State in 8:33.5, and Hopkins in 9:09.3. The JHU women's varsity four of Sharon Betz (Bedford, MA/Bedford), Caitlin Hurst (Fort Collins, CO/Pouire), Meredith Clayton (St. Louis, MO/Villa Duchesne), Caroline Hookway (West Boylston, MA/Massachusetts Academy of Math & Science), and coxswain Ariel Lyons-Warren (St. Louis, MO/Ladue Horton Watkins) finished third in the Division I event in 7:38.4, placing behind LaSalle in 7:33.9 and Pittsburgh in 7:37.4. Bucknell was fourth in 8:00.0, while William & Mary was fifth in 8:16.3. The novice four and varsity four later joined to finish fourth in the Division I varsity event in 6:55.3. Drexel took the grand final in 6:41.9, followed by Bucknell in 6:42.1, George Mason in 6:53.0, Hopkins, and Loyola in 7:02.5.
In men's action, the Blue Jay men's novice four of David Small (Leominster, MA/Groton), Vadim Gretchouchkin (New York City, NY/Stayvesant), Peter Ryan (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion), and Michael Walsh (Woodbridge, VA/Paul VI Catholic) finished fourth in its heat in 7:28.4 before winning the petite final in the same time.
The men's varsity four of Sten Tullberg (Lexington Park, MD/Great Mills), Joel Carlin (Hyde Park, VT/Lamoille Union), Derek Davies (Elma, NY/St. Joe's Collegiate Institute), Dave Crandall (Springfield, OR/Springfield) and coxswain Terry Dean (Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine) placed second in its heat before finishing fifth in the afternoon's grand final. LaSalle won the race in 6:43.3, followed by New York Maritime in 6:52.6, Pittsburgh in 6:56.1, Penn State in 6:57.8, Hopkins in 7:01.9, and Maryland in 7:13.6.
