The Johns Hopkins men's frosh/novice heavyweight eight won its heat as the Blue Jay men's and women's crew teams completed their 2004 seasons Friday and Saturday at the Dad Vail Regatta held on the Schykill River.
The JHU boat of freshman Steven Flores (McAllen, TX/The Science Academy), sophomore Sean Cheng (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport), Robert Mattina, freshman Teddy Drivas (New York City, NY/Stuyvesant), freshman Greg Kearns (Norristown, PA/St. Paul's), freshman Wesley Fredericks (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan), freshman Lukasz Bugaj (Kalamazoo, MI/Portage Northern), sophomore Matt Hart (Tampa, FL/Berkeley Prep) and senior coxswain Michael Vu (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) won its heat in 6:21.9, finishing ahead of Pittsburgh in 6:24.0, Lafayette in 6:30.0, Albany in 6:35.0, Merchant Marines in 6:59.0 and Lawrence in 7:02.7.
The Blue Jay boat advanced to the semifinal, where Hopkins finished fourth in 6:19.5 Marietta took the semifinal in 5:59.1, followed by Drexel in 6:06.4, Lehigh in 6:18.1, JHU and Binghamton in 6:33.4
The Hopkins men's pair boat of junior Dave Small (Leominster, MA/Groton) and senior Derek Davies (Elma, NY/St. Joe's Collegiate Prep) placed third in its heat in 7:31.5. Jacksonville won the head in 7:26.1, ahead of Mary Washington in 7:29.3, Hopkins and Stony Brook in 7:37.5. The boat then finished fifth in the semifinal in 7:25.5, ahead of Penn State in 7:34.6. Boston College took the semifinal in 7:11.4, while Iona was second in 7:17.9 and Jacksonville came in third in 7:18.9.
The JHU women's pair boat of senior Caitlin Hurst (Fort Collins, CO/Poudre) and junior Caroline Hookway (West Boylston, MA/Massachusetts Academy of Math & Science) was second in its heat in 8:32.8, finishing only behind Toronto, which won the heat in 7:56.3. Nova South East University was third in 9:12.1, while Iona placed fourth in 9:17.2. The Blue Jay boat went on to finish fifth in the semifinal in 7:58.45, ahead of Loyola in 8:22.6. St. Thomas won the semifinal in 7:44.6, followed by Pittsburgh in 7:47.4, Washington University in 7:53.7 and Tennessee-Chattanooga in 7:56.9.
The Hopkins women's lightweight four boat of sophomore Renee Egusa (Westport, CT/Staples), freshman Theresa Keating (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow), senior Allison McNickle (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook), sophomore Eleanor Glifort (Chugiak, AK/Chugiak) and junior coxswain Ariel Lyons-Warren (St. Louis, MO/Ladue) was also second in its heat in 7:51.3. Georgia Tech won the heat in 7:43.0, ahead of Hopkins, Catholic in 7:59.6, George Mason in 8:00.3 and St. Thomas in 8:06.5. The JHU boat then finished fourth in its final in 7:58.45, ahead of Maryland in 8:20.83 and Florida in 8:27.99. Georgia Tech won the final in 7:42.1, while Carnegie Mellon was second in 7:44.67 and Georgia came in third in 7:55.64.
