York, PA - The JHU novice women's four, varsity women's four, and novice men's four each won their grand final races as the Blue Jay men's and women's crew teams competed at the Atlantic Collegiate League Sprints last Saturday.

The novice women's four of Manuella Andrade (Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais), Ellie Glifort (Chugiak, AK/Chugiak), Renee Egusa (Westport, CT/Staples), Priscilla Pang (Grand Prairie, TX/Texas Academy of Math & Science) and coxswain Payal Ghosh (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury) won its race in 7:33.2, ahead of Ithaca in 7:53.2, Mary Washington in 8:17.3, Vassar in 8:24.7, and Stockton in 9:09.9.

The varsity women's four of Sharon Betz (Bedford, MA/Bedford), Caitlin Hurst (Fort Collins, CO/Pouire), Meredith Clayton (St. Louis, MO/Villa Duchesne), Caroline Hookway (West Boylston, MA/Massachusetts Academy of Math & Science), and coxswain Ariel Lyons-Warren (St. Louis, MO/Ladue Horton Watkins) finished in 7:18.6, defeating Bryn Mawr in 7:30.1, Stockton in 7:35.1, Marietta in 7:42.4, and R.I.T. in 8:35.6. The team later raced to another victory over Ithaca, which had missed the earlier event, with Egusa filling in for Betz.

The JHU novice men's four of David Small (Leominster, MA/Groton), Vadim Gretchouchkin (New York City, NY/Stayvesant), Peter Ryan (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion), and Michael Walsh (Woodbridge, VA/Paul VI Catholic) won its grand final in 7:05.4, finishing ahead of Mary Washington in 7:06.9, Vassar in 7:09.9, Washington College in 7:12.1, and R.I.T. in 7:38.6.

The men's varsity four of Joel Carlin (Hyde Park, VT/Lamoille Union), Sten Tullberg (Lexington Park, MD/Great Mills), Dave Crandall (Springfield, OR/Springfield), Small and coxswain Terry Dean (Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine) finished first in its morning heat and placed third in the grand final. Virginia took the gold medal by winning in 6:30.2, followed by Vassar in 6:36.7, Hopkins in 6:38.8, Washington College in 6:51.6, and Susquehanna in 6:53.2.
 

 

The Blue Jay men's pair finished fourth in its race in 8:06.7, behind Stockton in 7:02.7, Virginia in 7:21.3, and Mary Washington in 7:22.5.

The Hopkins crew teams head to Lorton, Virginia for the Mid-Atlantic Championships on Sunday, May 4.
