Blue Jay Crew Teams Win Three Gold Medals At Knecht Cup April 18, 2003
Camden, NJ - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's crew teams turned in impressive performances last weekend at the Knecht Cup, as the Blue Jays won gold medals in three races. The varsity women's four of rowers Meredith Clayton (St. Louis, MO/Villa Duchesne), Caroline Hookway (West Boylston, MA/Massachusetts Academy of Math & Science), Caitlin Hurst (Fort Collins, CO/Pouire), and Sharon Betz (Bedford, MA/Bedford) along with coxswain Ariel Lyons-Warren (St. Louis, MO/Ladue Horton Watkins) led Hopkins by winning its morning heat in 8:08.9 and its afternoon semifinal in 8:00.2. The team went on to win the gold medal in 8:10.0, finishing ahead of Dowling in 8:13.3, LaSalle in 8:13.6, Vermont in 8:17.7, Kansas in 8:18.3, and Radcliffe in 8:24.7.
The JHU novice women's four of rowers Manuella Andrade (Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais), Renee Egusa (Westport, CT/Staples), Ellie Glifort (Chugiak, AK/Chugiak), and Priscilla Pang (Grand Prairie, TX/Texas Academy of Math & Science) along with coxswain Payal Ghosh (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury) also won its morning heat in 8:27.5 and its afternoon semifinal in 8:15.4. The Blue Jays then won the grand final in 8:32.6, ahead of Wichita in 8:37.0, Kansas in 8:43.0, Tulsa in 8:45.7, Bryn Mawr in 8:49.0, and Delaware in 8:49.6.
The varsity women's pair placed fifth in its semifinal in 9:29.5, behind Tulsa in 7:55.0, Bucknell in 7:55.5, Massachusetts in 7:58.4, and St. Joseph's in 8:37.5. The novice men's four of rowers Dave Small (Leominster, MA/Groton), Vadim Gretchouchkin (New York, NY/Stayvesant), Peter Ryan (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion), and Michael Walsh (Woodbridge, VA/Paul VI Catholic) advanced placed third in its heat in 8:06.2 and second in the semifinals in 7:52.8. The team then finished second in the petite final in 7:42.4, behind only Loyola in 7:40.0. The Blue Jays came in ahead of Virginia Tech in 7:45.3, Fairfield in 7:45.9, NY Maritime in 7:48.3, and Washington College in 8:01.8. The varsity men's four of rowers Joel Carlin (Hyde Park, VT/Lamoille Union), Sten Tullberg (Lexington Park, MD/Great Mills), Derek Davies (Elma, NY/St. Joe's Collegiate Institute), and Dave Crandall (Springfield, OR/Springfield) along with coxswain Terry Dean (Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine), competing in the DII/DIII event, won its heat in 7:12.6 and the grand final in 7:07.6. The Blue Jays finished ahead of Vassar in 7:10.2, NY Maritime in 7:10.4, Geneseo in 7:13.8, Susquehanna in 7:21.5, and St. Lawrence in 7:26.1. The four later combined with rowers Allen Wong (San Francisco, CA/Island School-Hong Kong), John Cutright (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis), Alex Forman (Denver, CO/George Washington), and Pat Mason (Milford, CT/Fairfield Prep) to finish third in the DII/DIII eight race. USMMA won the grand final in 6:37.3, followed by Vassar in 6:42.0, Hopkins in 6:45.0, St. Lawrence in 6:51.5, and Susquehanna in 6:54.3. The Blue Jays will compete at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia, PA, on Saturday.
