Blue Jay Crew Teams Open Season At SERCS Regatta April 14, 2003
Elberton, GA - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's crew teams opened their 2003 seasons Saturday by competing in the South Eastern Regional Collegiate Sprints regatta hosted by the University of Georgia.
In the first event of the day, the men's pair team of Sten Tullberg (Lexington Park, MD/Great Mills) and Derek Davies (Elma, NY/St. Joe's Collegiate Institute) advanced to the finals. Tullberg and Davies were joined by Joel Carlin (Hyde Park, VT/Lamoille Union), Alex Forman (Denver, CO/George Washington), David Crandall (Springfield, OR/Springfield), John Cutright (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis), Allen Wong (San Francisco, CA/Island School-Hong Kong), Pat Mason (Milford, CT/Fairfield Prep), and coxswain Terry Dean (Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine) as the JHU men's varsity eight raced into the finals in the morning and placed fifth in the final that afternoon.
The novice men's four also garnered a fourth-place finish in its first-ever sprint race. The Blue Jay women's team also opened the season strong, winning a gold and a silver medal in later events. The varsity women's four team of Sharon Betz (Bedford, MA/Bedford), Caitlin Hurst (Fort Collins, CO/Pouire), Meredith Clayton (St. Louis, MO/Villa Duchesne), Caroline Hookway (West Boylston, MA/Massachusetts Academy of Math & Science), and coxswain Ariel Lyons-Warren (St. Louis, MO/Ladue Horton Watkins) and the novice women's four team of Payal Ghosh (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury), Priscilla Pang (Grand Prairie, TX/Texas Academy of Math & Science), Eleanor Glifort (Chugiak, AK/Chugiak), Manuella Andrade (Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais), and coxswain Alyson Covino (Burlington, MA/Burlington) cruised through their morning heats with first-place finishes. The varsity women later went on to place first out of 14 boats, while the novice women finished second out of 15 boats. Additionally, the women's pair team of Allison McNickle (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook) and Jamie Planck (Peoria, IL/Richwoods) raced to a fourth-place finish. -30- |
