Lorton, VA - The Johns Hopkins men's novice four team won its race in 7:44.9 to lead the Blue Jay men's and women's crew teams at the Occoquan Sprints Saturday on the campus of George Mason University.

The Blue Jays finished ahead of Charleston (7:47.4), Washington (7:51.9), Maryland (8:09.5), Mary Washington (8:15.8), and Richmond (9:01.5).

The men's varsity four of rowers Sten Tullberg (Lexington Park, MD/Great Mills), Joel Carlin (Hyde Park, VT/Lamoille Union), Derek Davies (Elma, NY/St. Joe's Collegiate Institute), and Dave Crandall (Springfield, OR/Springfield) along with coxswain Terry Dean (Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine) placed second in its event in 7:14.6. The Blue Jays finished behind only USMMA (7:01.5) while placing ahead of Maryland (7:30.6), UNC Wilmington (7:53.2), St. Mary's (7:56.2), and Susquehanna (8:02.9).
 

 

The men's four then combined with Allen Wong (San Francisco, CA/Island School - Hong Kong), Alex Forman (Denver, CO/George Washington), John Cutright (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis), and Pat Mason (Milford, CT/Fairfield Prep) to finish fifth in the men's varsity eight in 7:08.2. George Washington took the race in 6:40.6, followed by Villanova (6:47.1), William & Mary (6:55.6), Virginia Tech (7:03.8), Hopkins, and John Carroll (7:32.0).

The Blue Jay women's team was led by the novice four team of rowers Manuella Andrade (Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais), Priscilla Pang (Grand Prairie, TX/Texas Academy of Math & Science), Renne Egusa (Westport, CT/Staples), and Ellie Glifort (Chugiak, AK/Chugiak) along with coxswain Payal Ghosh (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury) which finished second in 8:35.3. Virginia won the race in 8:14.5, followed by Hopkins, Pittsburgh (9:23), George Mason (9:29.5), North Carolina (9:31), and Richmond (10:03).

The women's varsity four team of rowers Sharon Betz (Bedford, MA/Bedford), Caitlin Hurst (Fort Collins, CO/Pouire), Meredith Clayton (St. Louis, MO/Villa Duchesne), and Caroline Hookway (West Boylston, MA/Massachusetts Academy of Math & Science) along with coxswain Ariel Lyons-Warren (St. Louis, MO/Ladue Horton Watkins) followed by finishing third out of 22 competing boats in 7:49.0. LaSalle won the race in 7:42.9, followed by Virginia (7:43.8), Hopkins, Virginia Tech (8:26.6), Penn State (8:33), and Charleston (9:24.6).

The JHU women's pair team of Allison McNickle (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook) and Jamie Planck (Peoria, IL/Richwoods) raced to a fourth-place finish in 9:56.4 in its event. Bucknell took the race in 9:00.5 and was followed by Penn State in 9:44.4, LaSalle in 9:37.8, Hopkins, Pittsburgh in 10:05.2, and USMMA in 10:24.9.

The Blue Jays will next be in action on Saturday and Sunday at the Knecht Cup regatta in Camden, NJ.
