March 25, 2002

The Johns Hopkins men's and women's crew teams opened their 2002 seasons Saturday at the Aiken County Regatta at Langley Pond.

The men's varsity eight finished fourth in the finals after placing second in the morning heat. The Blue Jays finished the finals in a time of 7:00.4, behind Dartmouth (6:36.4), Georgia Tech (6:41.1), and Williams (6:49.2). Clemson placed fifth in 7:08.7 and Williams was sixth in 7:11.5.

The JHU women's varsity eight finished second out of three boats in the final-only event. Georgia Tech won the race in 7:45.8, followed by Hopkins in 8:04.6 and UNC Wilmington in 8:49.4.

The men's novice/freshman eight did not advance to the afternoon final due to equipment trouble, while the regatta did not offer a women's junior varsity event.

The Blue Jays return to action Saturday when they compete at the Caspersen Cup in Chestertown, MD. Hopkins won the overall points trophy last year at the race, which is held annually for schools of the Hodson Trust.
