Blue Jays Fly South In Search Of Non-Conference Victories In ECAC Holiday Festival

BALTIMORE, MD - After a rough season-opening stretch, the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team travels to Orlando, FL for two ECAC showdowns at Disney's Wide World of Sports. The Blue Jays begin the New Year with a 1-6 record (0-2 Centennial). Scouting the Opposition Goucher enters the ECAC Holiday Festival at 4-4 (0-1 Landmark). The Gophers and the Blue Jays have faced two common opponents so far this season, each suffering losses to York and Swarthmore. Amber Smith is the only Gopher to average double-figure points, collecting 14.6 per game. Hopkins leads the 33-year series, which began in 1976, 18-2. Goucher has not defeated JHU since 1977. The Griffins of Gwynedd-Mercy venture to Orlando with a 5-3 record while holding a 2-0 mark in Colonial States Athletic Conference play. Lauren Rosar is averaging a double-double for the Griffins with 12.0 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. Kristy Cramp (10.4 ppg) and Kate Wisniewski (10.1 ppg) are the only other Griffins to average double-figures. JHU leads the all-time series with Gwynedd-Mercy, 1-0, after a 56-54 victory in 2004. Baltimore Buckets Senior Caitlin Sloane (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) and juniors Britni Lonesome (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic) and Anastasia Wynn (Baltimore, MD/McDonough), all Baltimore natives, account for thirty percent of Hopkins' points this season (119-of-395). The Blue Jays are averaging 56.4 points per game. Notables Freshman Chantel Mattiola (Trappe, PA/Perkiomen Valley) leads the team in assists (17) this season. Her 17 helpers are the most by a freshman since Katie Biggart's (Darien, CT/Darien) 19 assists in her rookie campaign in 206-07. The Blue Jays own a 4.3 advantage on the glass over their opponents this season. Senior Kristin Phillips leads the team, averaging 11.6 boards per contest and has tallied double-digit rebounds in the last three games and four on the year, including a game-high 17 rebounds against Swarthmore. JHU held Swarthmore's Kathryn Stockbower, the top rebounder in the conference, to nine boards in their last meeting, snapping her streak after five consecutive double-doubles in 2008. Centennial Comparison Senior Kristin Phillips ranks second in the league in rebounds with 11.6 per game. Sophomore Lyndsay Burton is alos second in field goal percentage, shooting .574 from the floor (39-of-68). Junior Katie Biggart ranks third in the conference with her .438 3-point field goal percentage (7-of-16).
