Funk Announces 2015 Recruiting Class
Baltimore, MD - Johns Hopkins women's basketball head coach Nancy Funk announced today that eight new players will join the program for the 2015-16 season. The new class will join seven returners as the squad looks to make it back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012.
"We have a very diverse group of players entering our program this year," said Funk. "Each one of them brings a unique combination of skills. We graduated seven players and worked hard to find players who not only had talent, but also met the position needs of our program. We feel that we have the right blend of perimeter scoring and support in the paint coming from this class."
The incoming class includes Emma Brennan (Chicago, IL/St.Ignatious), Rory Cole (Sun Valley, ID/Wood River), Madison McGrath (Congers, NY/Albertus Magnus), Lexie Scholtz (South Pasadena, CA/South Pasadena), Lillian Scott (Westfield, NJ/Westfield), Maggie Spitzer (Broomfield, CO/Holy Family), Marissa Varnado (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep), and Sophia Way (Chicago, IL/Adlai E. Stevenson).

Emma Brennan Guard 5-6 Palos Heights, IL St. Ignatious HS
Named to the GCAC All-Conference Team...Served as team captain...Led St. Ignatious in scoring, 3FGs and minutes...Participated in the Illinois High School Association Three-Point Showdown...Named to the All-Tournament Team at the Riverside Brookfield Holiday Tournament...Played AAU for the 17U Illinois Defenders where she averaged 15.1 ppg and 4.9 apg.
Rory Cole Forward/Center 6-1 Sun Valley, ID Wood River HS
Four-time letter winner...Three-time team captain...First Team All-Conference as a senior...Wood River High School Athlete of the Year in 2015...Averaged 9.4 ppg and 8.7 rpg as a senior...Class Valedictorian.
Madison McGrath Guard 5-7 Congers, NY Albertus Magnus HS
Three-time All-League honoree...Recognized as First Team All-County after junior and senior seasons and Second Team All-County after sophomore season...Helped lead her team to undefeated league championship season, Section 1 Class A Championship, Class A Regional Championship and an appearance in the New York State Final Four as a senior...Named to the state tournament All-Tournament Team as a senior...1,000 point scorer.
Lexie Scholtz Guard 5-7 South Pasadena, CA South Pasadena HS
Four-year team member...Three-year team captain...Helped lead team to a combined 84-26 record over four-year career, including 24-3 as a senior...Recognized as South Pasadena High School Female Athlete of the Year, Rio Hondo League Co-MVP and All-CIF Division 3A as a senior when she averaged 17.4 ppg, 11.9 rpg, 4.2 apg, and 3.0 spg.
Lillian Scott Guard 5-6 Westfield, NJ Westfield HS
Led her team in scoring during all four seasons...First Team All-County as a junior...Third Team All-Group 4 as a junior and senior...Named the MVP Len Sepanak Tournament as a junior...Second all time in career points in school history...1,000 point scorer.
Maggie Spitzer Forward 5-11 Broomfield, CO Holy Family
Played on the varsity team all four years...Three-time Academic All-State honoree...Served as team captain during senior season...Helped lead team to Class 4A Quarterfinals...Named Third-Team Colorado High School Girls Coaches Association All-State Team as a senior...Recognized as Honorable Mention All-State by the Denver Post following junior season...also played four seasons of soccer where she started as the team's goalkeeper and was named second-team all-state as a senior.
Marissa Varnado Forward 5-10 Baltimore, MD Notre Dame Prep
Played four seasons on the varsity team...Set school record for points in a season (356) as a senior...Helped lead squad to three appearances in the semifinals...Two-time All-IAAM honoree...Scored 19 points to help Notre Dame Prep knock off the top seed in the 2014-15 IAAM playoffs.
Sophia Way Guard 5-9 Chicago, IL Adlai E. Stevenson HS
Four-year varsity team member...Served as team captain during junior and senior seasons...Three-time All-Conference selection...Two-time Daily Herald MVP...Two-time IHSA Scholastic Achievement Award Recipient...Stevenson Female Winter Scholar-Athlete Award winner...Helped lead team to regional championship as a freshman and sophomore...1,000 point scorer.
"We are very excited about this outstanding and talented group," added Funk. "We will look to our senior leadership to help us blend the newcomers in quickly. Our returning players have gained valuable experience during their careers and we are confident that the returners will combine with this strong freshmen class and contribute to our future success."
Funk and the Blue Jays will open the 2015-2016 campaign when they host the Mike Durgala Memorial Tournament November 21 and 22 in the Goldfarb Gymnasium.
