Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore Lauren Kornacki (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) opened a 12-0 first-half run for Mary Washington with a layup, polished it off with a conventional three point play and host Johns Hopkins led just once in the final 24 minutes as the Eagles knocked off the Blue Jays, 54-49, in the championship game of the 2009 Mike Durgala Memorial Tournament Sunday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 3-0 with the win, while the Blue Jays slip to 1-1 with the loss.

Hopkins had turned a 10-9 deficit into a 19-10 advantage on the strength of three pointers by senior Britni Lonesome (Baltimore, MD/Poly) and junior Siobhan Callanan (Barrington, IL/Barringon). Callanan capped the 10-0 run with a layup with just over nine minutes remaining in the half, but Kornacki's layup ignited the Eagles' 12-0 run, which included back-to-back three-pointers by Ashley Reed (Fairfax Station, VA/Robinson) and Katie Wimmer (Vienna, VA/James Madison) in a span of just 30 seconds and Kornacki's three-point play just under five minutes before halftime.

The Blue Jays grabbed their final lead of the game at 23-22 on a pair of free throws by Nia Josiah (Frederick, MD/Thomas Johnson), but the Eagles carried a 29-28 lead into halftime and turned up the defense at the start of the second half to pull away.

Wimmer and tournament MVP Jenna McRae (Springfield, VA/Annandale) combined for all 10 points in a 10-0 spree for the Eagles to open the second half as the 29-28 halftime lead swelled to 39-28 after McRae hit three free throws with 12:46 remaining. A jumper by Callahan finally broke the scoring drought for the Blue Jays a short time later, but the Eagles maintained at least a six-point lead until the final two minutes.

A pair of Chantel Mattiola (Trappe, PA/Perkiomen Valley) free throws with 1:55 remaining drew the Blue Jays to within 51-46, but the Eagles came up with a pair of crucial offensive rebounds down the stretch to maintain possession and Hopkins never made it a one-possession game in the final moments.

McRae led three players in double figures for the Eagles as she scored a game-high 14 points and added five rebounds and a pair of assists in 33 minutes. Wimmer (11 points) and Kornacki (10) also scored in double figures for Mary Washington.

Johns Hopkins was led by Lonesome and Callahan, who scored nine points apiece, but the Blue Jays hit just 5-of-23 shots from the floor in the second half missed 11-of-22 free throws in the loss.
