ALLENTOWN, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team wasn't able to overcome a Muhlenberg team that went undefeated in regular season Centennial Conference play and surrendered in a 76-55 loss in Allentown, PA on Sunday. The Blue Jays finish the 2008-09 season with a 14-13 mark after a 1-7 season start. The Mules move to 24-3 on the season to claim the Centennial Conference championship.

Freshman Alex Chili had 18 first-half points for the Mules and hit three 3-pointers in the half. The Blue Jays exited the first half with a 38-28 deficit to fight despite shooting 40 percent from the floor.

Hopkins cut the Mule lead to four points with 9:45 to play in the first, 15-11 with a Kristin Phillips jumper, the closest the Blue Jays would come.

An 8-2 run for Muhlenberg opened the second half and gave the Mules a 16-point advantage. Senior Caitlin Sloane knocked down a 3-pointer and two free throws from Lyndsay Burton followed. Britni Lonesome hit a free throw as well to make it a 10-point game, 46-36.

Alex Chili answered with five-straight points, stretching the lead to 51-36 at 13:32. Burton replied with back-to-back jumpers to make it 51-40 at 12:36.

Kelly McKeon's layup with 6:53 remaining gave Muhlenberg a 17-point lead. Phillips hit a free throw and a layup by Stephanie Fong brought it to 61-47 at 6:20.

Anastasia Wynn drained her two free throws with 4:38 remaining took the Blue Jays within 11 before a six-point Muhlenberg spurt made it 69-52 with less than three minutes remaining.

 

 

Hopkins returned from a timeout and set Sloane up for a 3-pointer as she scored the last three Blue Jay points of the game.

Burton and Phillips each scored 12 points for JHU. Burton neared a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds.

Chili finished with 23 points for the Mules and teammate Kelly McKeon had 21 points.

The Blue Jays have faced Muhlenberg in the Centennial Conference championship seven times.
