Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - Freshman Chantel Mattiola found her rhythm in Goldfarb Gymnasium Wednesday evening, hitting 4-of-4 from 3-point range to lead the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team past Bryn Mawr, 67-31 for head coach Nancy Funk's 400th career victory at JHU. Hopkins allowed just one Bryn Mawr field goal in the second half to capture a 13-11 overall mark and rise to 11-6 in Centennial Conference play. With the loss, Bryn Mawr slumps to 2-22 on the season and 0-18 in the Centennial Conference.

It was all Mattiola in the first half, as she hit four 3-pointers in four attempts to give Hopkins a 33-20 advantage in the first half. Senior Caitlin Sloane also knocked down two treys of her own to contribute to the Blue Jays' 53.8% shooting from 3-point land.

The Owls had a one-point advantage over JHU at 11:13 after a free throw by Caroline Heffernan, but it didn't take long for the Blue Jays to hit their stride.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Mattiola opened up a 13-0 run by Hopkins. Senior Jenna Berninger and sophomore Lyndsay Burton each followed with baskets before Mattiola lit it up again from downtown, capping the 13-0 run.

The Owls scored two layups with climb within eight with 3:04 left in the first half. Mattiola drained another three, followed by a three from Sloane to regain a 13-point lead, 31-18.

A 19-3 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half solidified the victory as the Blue Jays worked their way into a 52-23 lead with 9:30 to play after a jumper in the paint by Mattiola.

The Owls would score just one field goal in the second half, coming with 52 second remaining. Lindsey Darvin scored a layup on a fast-break to make it 67-30 in the final minute. The Owls hit 9-of-14 free throw attempts in the second half.

The Blue Jays out-rebounded Bryn Mawr, 48-25. Mattiola's 4-of-4 effort from 3-point range was the best by any Blue Jay this season, rivaled only by Sloane's 3-of-3 performance against Haverford. Hopkins' 10 hits from long-range are a season-high.

Mattiola finished with 14 points, a career-high, shooting 100% from the floor. Sloane also scored nine points and had five assists. Burton notched 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Senior Kristin Phillips finished with six points and 11 rebounds.

Lindsey Darvin led the Owls with 10 points, while senior Jessica Allen had nine. Caroline Heffernan grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

After hitting three 3-pointers against the Owls, Sloane moves into third place all-time in JHU women's basketball history in 3-point field goals made with 107.

The Blue Jays hit the road on Saturday, February 21 for their final regular season contest of 2008-09, heading to Washington College. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
