BALTIMORE, MD - Freshman Lyndsay Burton's (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) jumper with one second left rattled out as Gettysburg College held off a late rally to defeat the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team by a score of 55-53 on Wednesday night. The Bullets (14-8, 10-5 CC) swept the season series from the Blue Jays (10-11, 8-7 CC) for the first time since the 1987-88 season as the teams participated in the WBCA's "Think Pink" Night.

Hopkins came out of the locker room at halftime trailing 31-23. The Blue Jays scored five of the first seven points in the half to cut it to a 33-28 game. The Bullets responded with a 9-2 run to go up by 12 at 42-30, their largest lead of the second half. Caitlin Moser had four points during that stretch while Courtney Fields nailed a three-pointer. Hopkins got a pair of free throws from junior Kristin Phillips (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill) at 14:46 and those two makes started a 12-3 scoring spree to bring the Blue Jays within three at 45-42. Burton contributed four points for the Blue Jays during that stretch. The two teams traded buckets over the next few minutes before a lay-up by senior Andrea Dodrill (Baltimore, MD/Bryn Mawr) at 6:50 made it a one-point game. Gettysburg scored four of the next five points to go back up by four at 51-47 with 4:05 to play. A pair of made free throws by Burton at 3:11, made it a 52-51 game but Fields answered with a triple for the Bullets. The visitors led 55-51 with 2:27 to go. Burton scored her fifth bucket of the night to cut it to two with 1:56 to play but that was as close as the hosts would get.

In the first half with the score tied at 2-2, Gettysburg went on a 7-3 run to go up by three. Moser knocked down four of the Bullets seven during that stretch. Hopkins cut it to one on a jumper by Burton with 12:20 to go in the first half. The Bullets then scored nine of the next 11 points to go up 17-9 with 8:01 to play. Hopkins put together back-to-back threes by junior Jenna Berninger (Center Valley, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) and Caitlin Sloane (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) to make it a 17-15 game with 6:08 to go in the half. Gettysburg scored 16 of the final 22 points in the half to take a 31-23 lead into the half.
 

 

Fields and Moser each knocked 16 points in the contest to lead the Bullets. Nicole Dobranski pulled down 10 rebounds in the game for Gettysburg.

Phillips and Dodrill each recorded their sixth double-double of the season. Dodrill finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds while Phillips contributed 10 points and 10 boards. Burton was the other Blue Jay in double figures finishing with 14.

Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, February 16 at Muhlenberg. Game time in Allentown is set for 4 p.m.
