COLLEGEVILLE, PA - Mary Kate Daley (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert's) had a game-high 22 points and scored her 1000th career point to lead Ursinus over Johns Hopkins 53-52 in Centennial Conference action Saturday afternoon.
The loss was the first for the Blue Jays since a January 14 loss at Muhlenberg. Hopkins falls to 18-5 overall and 14-2 in league play. Muhlenberg, currently in second in the league at 13-2 will host McDaniel on Sunday at 6 pm.
Ursinus led Hopkins from the beginning, but the Blue Jays battled back, taking their first lead at 21-20 at 3:41 in the first half on a jumper by senior Katie Kimball (Garden City, NY/Garden City). The teams traded baskets to close out the half, with freshman Caitlin Sloane (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) draining a three with 43 seconds remaining to give Hopkins a 26-25 lead heading into the lockerroom.
The Blue Jays opened the half on a 17-4, extending its lead to 14 points before the Bears began chipping away. Hopkins held that lead until 7:30 in the second half when Ursinus tied the game at 44-44. The teams went on to trade baskets until McMahon went to the free throw line with the game tied at 52-52 and 29 seconds to play.
Kimball led the Blue Jays with 13 points and nine rebounds. Junior Julie Miller (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) had a game-high 14 rebounds and nine points. Daley was joined in double figures by Molly Guntli (Dallas, PA/Bishop O'Reilly) and Sarah Hennessey (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert's) with 10 points apiece. Guntli posted a double-double, pulling in 12 rebounds in addition to her 10 points.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, February 14 as the Blue Jays travel to Gettysburg for a 7 pm game. Hopkins will then wrap-up the regular season at home on Sunday, February 19 versus Franklin & Marshall.
