ORLANDO, FL - Gwynedd-Mercy proved too much for the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team as the Griffins overcame the Blue Jays, 70-56 in the ECAC Holiday Festival opener. The Blue Jays were paced by senior Caitlin Sloane (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) who produced a season-high 11 points on 2-of-5 shooting from 3-point range and went 3-for-3 from the free throw line. JHU drops to 1-7 on the season as the Griffins move to 6-3 on the year.

The Blue Jays scored the first six points of the second half with a layup by junior Anastasia Wynn (Baltimore, MD/McDonough), a jumper from senior Kristin Phillips (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill) and a jumper by Jenna Berninger (Center Valley, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) to take a five-point advantage, 41-36.

After a scoring drought of more than three minutes, Phillips hit a layup to make it 43-44. The Griffins' Bridget Morrin notched a 3-pointer and a layup for the next five points of the game.

Down six, Sloane answered with a 3-pointer of her own to close the gap, 46-49 at 11:46. Junior Monica Mitchell (Reynoldsburg, OH/Reynoldsburg) grabbed an offensive rebound before scoring a layup at 9:30 to make it 48-49.

Gwynedd-Mercy would follow up with a 11-1 run to take a 14-point lead at 3:39, 66-52. The Griffins hit 7-of-8 free throws in that stretch.

Back-to-back free throws by Sloane at 2:12 would bring the Blue Jays to 54-66. The Griffins answered with four consecutive points from the charity stripe for a 70-56 advantage at 1:32. JHU shot just 7-of-27 from the floor in the second stanza.
 

 

Hopkins led by as much as six in the first half following a Britni Lonesome (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic) at 5:57 for a 27-21 lead. A 14-5 run by the Griffins late in the first half would pave the way for a 36-35 halftime score.

Junior Anastasia Wynn finished with eight points, three assists, two steals and three rebounds. Junior Monica Mitchell led the Blue Jays with 11 rebounds, a season-high. Sophomore Lyndsay Burton (North Valley, NJ/West Morris) also had eight points and two steals. Junior Britni Lonesome went 2-of-4 from beyond the arc for eight points. Senior Kristin Phillips also grabbed eight boards.

JHU returns to action on Saturday, January 3 to face Goucher in the second round of the ECAC Holiday Festival. The contest is slated for a 5 p.m. tilt in Orlando, FL at the Milkhouse Arena at Disney's Wide World of Sports.
