Johns Hopkins Cross Country Honored for Academic Achievements

The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association recently announced its cross country academic awards and both the Johns Hopkins men's and women's teams were well-represented.

Both squads were honored as All-Academic teams, the distinction is given to teams with a cumulative GPA of 3.1 or better. The Hopkins men carry a collective 3.36 GPA, while the women boast a 3.46 GPA.

Five men and four women also earned individual All-Academic honors. To be named to the USTFCCCA's All-Academic team one must finish in the top 25 percent at their regional and have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher.

On the men's side Ryan Schwartz, Ollie Hickson, Brandon Fielder, Akshay Alaghatta and Doran Walsten earned the award. Schwartz, a senior, finished sixth at the Mideast Regional to qualify for the NCAA Championships where he placed 59th of 280 runners.

Caroline Smith, Courtney Kelly, Caroline Powers and Jordan Delane represented the Blue Jay women on the All-Academic team. The foursome played a large role in Hopkins' eighth-straight regional title win and fourth place finish at the NCAA Championships. Smith, a sophomore, finished 12th at NCAA's to collect All-America honors.
