Blue Jays Finish in 26th at NCAA Championship
Nov. 19, 2011 WINNECONNE, WI - The Johns Hopkins men's cross country team, competing at the NCAA Championship for the first time since 1977, finished in 26th place Saturday at the Division III Championships at the Lake Breeze Golf Club on Saturday. Sophomore Max Robinsonwas the Blue Jays' top finisher as he crossed in 25:06.15 for 52nd place among runners whose teams qualified for the championships and 70th overall (overall place includes runners who qualified as individuals). Hopkins totaled 584 points to earn its 26th-place finish. North Central won the team title with a score of 110 points, while Haverford (172 points), Washington University (206), SUNY Geneseo (235) and Wisconsin-Oshkosh (277) rounded out the top five. St. Thomas (MN) produced the individual champion in senior Ben Sathre, who clocked in at 23:44.27. Sathre earned his spot in the championship as an individual qualifier. Robinson broke away from his teammates and kept a steady pace througout the race as he finished the first mile in 4:50 and each of the subsequent miles between 5:00 and 5:08. Robinson ran with a deep pack as he finished within 10 seconds of 25 runners who finished ahead of him and 27 more runners crossed the line within 10 seconds of him finishing. Johns Hopkins senior Brandon Hahn finished in 25:27.73 and placed 93rd among scoring runners, while freshman Austin Stecklair (25:45.47/132nd) and sophomores Julian Saliani (25:56.51/147th) and Ricky Mulroy (26:00.76/160th) rounded out the top five for the Blue Jays and counted in the overall team scoring. Brett Schwartz joined Hahn as the only two seniors in Hopkins' seven-man contingent that ran today and he was within seven seconds of Mulroy with a time of 26:07.29. Junior Josh Budman was less than a second behind Schwartz as he finished in 26:08.17. Of the 32 teams competing, Johns Hopkins easily ranked among the youngest. The Blue Jays were one of just 14 teams competing that counted one senior or less among their five scorers on the day.
