GETTYSBURG, PA -- The Johns Hopkins men's cross country team placed three runners in the top 15 and five in the top 23 as the Blue Jays earned a third-place finish at the 2008 Centennial Conference Championships at Gettysburg College Saturday afternoon. Dickinson won its first-ever Centennial title as the Red Devils had five of the top seven runners cross the line to total 23 points. Haverford, which had won every Centennial title prior to this season (1993-2007), finished second with 44 points and the Blue Jays totaled 81 points to garner third. Gettysburg (105) and Muhlenberg (123) rounded out the top five.

Senior Geoff Nunns was the top Johns Hopkins runner as he placed eighth overall with a time of 26:21.28. A five-man contingent from Haverford followed Nunns before freshman Brian Rooney and junior David Sigmon placed 14th and 15th, respectively. Rooney was second among all freshmen in the race as he clocked in at 26:33.81, while Sigmon was just behind at 26:35.

Hopkins clinched its third-place finish when junior Graham Belton placed 21st (26:50.67) and freshman Mickey Borsellino placed 23rd (26;53.36). Borsellino and Rooney's finishes made Hopkins the only school with two freshmen among the top 23 finishers. In all, JHU's five scoring runners crossed the line in a 32-second span.

Sophomores Derek Chang (33rd/27:17.20) and Brandon Hahn (41st/2737.30) and junior Michael Yuan (42nd/2741.58) rounded out JHU's finishers in the top 45. Of JHU's 12 competitors in the race, only two were seniors and six were freshmen and sophomores.

"We knew going into the race that we had a difficult task ahead of us," said head coach Bobby Van Allen. "We would have to step it up to secure a top-three finish without our top runner. The guys had more focus than ever today and we kept our goals of qualifying for nationals alive."

Johns Hopkins will return to action on November 15 when the Blue Jays compete in the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships.
