BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins wrestling coach Keith Norris announced today that 12 incoming freshmen will join the Blue Jay wrestling program for the 2009-10 season. The 12 hail from nine different states and each brings impressive prep credentials to Johns Hopkins.
Below is a quick look at each of the 12 incoming freshmen with season and career highlights included:
Teno Boone
Hometown: Baltimore, MD
High School: Poly
Projected weight: 125
Boone was a captain of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute wrestling team and compiled 31-4 record as a senior. He qualified for the state championships as a senior, when he also won a regional championship and finished as a Baltimore City runner-up.
Stuart Corless
Hometown: Wellesley, MA
High School: Roxbury Latin
Projected Weight: 174
Corless wrestled at Roxbury Latin, where he posted a career record of 96-26. During his senior year he won 32 matches and finished second at the New England Prep Championships.
Ben Elder
Hometown: Lexington, KY
High School: Phillips Andover Academy
Projected weight: 149/157
Elder wrestled at Phillips Andover Academy, where he won 67 matches in his career. During his senior year he compiled a record of 21-7 and finished 3rd at the New England Prep Championships.
Andrew Giannascoli
Hometown: Downingtown, PA
High School: Malvern Prep
Projected Weight: 165
Giannascoli is the career wins leader at Malvern Prep with 180 victories to his credit. In 2009 he won the Pennsylvania Prep State Championship and finished sixth at the National Preps. He also received the Southeastern Pennsylvania Scholar-Athlete award in as a senior.
Joseph Gowen
Hometown: Concord, NH
High School: St. Paul's School (NH)
Projected Weight: 157
Gowen served as the team captain of the St. Paul's School's wrestling team in New Hampshire. He finished 2nd in the Independent School League and was a National Prep qualifier.
Paul Marcello
Hometown: Pembroke Pines, FL
High School: Cardinal Gibbons
Projected Weight: 125/133
Marcello was a 2009 Florida State Champion with a 40-1 record and helped Cardinal Gibbons to a second place team finish. He was a three-time district champion and two-time county champion, claimed one regional title and qualified for the state championships three times. He concluded his career with a 129-14 record.
Lance McCoy
Hometown: Baltimore, MD
High School: Mervo
Projected Weight: 141/149
McCoy won his third Baltimore City title and his first Maryland State Championship as a senior. In the process, he became Mervo High School's first 4A-3A state champion and just the third state champion in Baltimore City history. McCoy earned Baltimore City Wrestler of the Year honors with a 26-1 record as a senior.
Dylan Meade
Hometown: Freehold, NJ
High School: Christian Brothers Academy
Projected Weight: 165/174
Meade posted a 28-5 record and won the New Jersey District 22 Championship as a senior. He was a two-year captain while wrestling at Christian Brothers Academy and had a career record of 85-30.
Isa Mohammed
Hometown: Clarksville, MD
High School: River Hill
Projected Weight: 125
Isa Mohammed will join his brother, Saud, at Johns Hopkins next year. As a senior, Isa won 41 matches and placed sixth at the Maryland1A/2A State Tournament. In 2009 he was inducted into the River Hill Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Reid Mosquera
Hometown: Andover, MA
High School: Phillips Andover Academy
Projected Weight: 197/HWT
As a junior, Mosquera had a record of 32-4, was a New England Prep Champion and a National Prep All-American.
He missed his final season with an injury.
Matt Nelson
Hometown: Gahanna, OH
High School: Gahanna Lincoln
Projected weight: 149/157
Nelson posted 120 wins in his career at Gahanna Lincoln High School. As a senior he had a 41-9 record and qualified for the 2009 Ohio High School Division I State Championships.
Salvatore Rizzo
Hometown: Islip, NY
High School: Chaminade
Projected weight: 157/165
Rizzo finished his senior season with a 29-11 record at Chaminade High School. He earned a first place finish at 2009 NSCHSAA League Tournament.
