CEDAR RAPIDS, IA -- Johns Hopkins senior 141-pounder Paul Marcello continued his stunning run at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on Saturday morning with a 3-1 win over top-seeded Joe Grippi of Springfield in the semifinals. Marcello moves into tonight's title bout with a chance to become the first national champion wrestler in school history.
Marcello trailed 1-0 entering the third period and started in the bottom position, but worked an escape with just over a minute remaining in regulation to knot the match at 1-1. Neither wrestler was able to score late and the match went to overtime.
It appeared the one-minute sudden death period would end with the score still tied before Marcello angled in on Grippi's left leg near the edge of the mat and was able to work his way behind just before time expired to grab the 3-1 win.
The win avenges an earlier loss this season for Marcello against Grippi. The two had met in the title bout of the Doug Parker Invitational with Grippi taking a 10-7 decision.
Marcello, who entered the tournament as the number five seed, will take on third-seeded Adam Sheley of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the championship match tonight at 8 pm (EST). Sheley scored a 6-3 win over Wartburg's Thomas Mirocha in the other semifinal.
